Cell Activation in Acrylic Painting: How to Create Luminous Flowing Cells
Some of the most breathtaking effects in acrylic painting happen not when the artist works hardest, but when they step back and let the paint do what it wants. Cell Activation is one of those techniques — a fluid painting method that coaxes paint into organic, jewel-like cells of color that seem to bloom across the canvas like something alive.
What Is Cell Activation?
Cell Activation is a pouring and fluid technique in acrylic painting where layers of thinned paint are poured, tilted, or pushed across a canvas. As the layers move and settle, the pigments separate — different paints have different densities, surface tensions, and particle sizes — and this separation creates organic circular formations called cells.
The effect is unlike anything you can achieve with a brush. Rather than painting cells into existence, the artist creates the conditions for them to appear. Think of it like ice crystals forming on a window: you can guide the temperature, the surface, the moisture — but the exact pattern that forms is nature's own.
The technique is especially dramatic with metallic and iridescent acrylic paints, which carry heavier, reflective pigment particles that behave differently from standard colors. When these metallic paints interact with lighter pigments in a pour, they naturally tend to separate and rise, creating shimmering cells surrounded by flowing color.
How Tamara Uses Cell Activation

Why Metallics and Cell Activation Work So Well Together
Standard acrylic pigments are ground to a consistent fine particle size. Metallic and iridescent pigments — the ones that give gold, bronze, pearl, and iridescent shimmer — are larger, heavier, and physically different. When you pour them alongside lighter pigments, the laws of physics do the artistic work: the heavier metallic particles separate differently from the lighter color particles, rising toward the surface or pooling at the edges of lighter paint.
This creates cells with a distinctly luminous character. The outer ring of a cell might glow with a warm gold shimmer, while the interior holds deep teal or midnight blue. The metallic edges catch the light like real metal, so the painting looks different under morning sunlight, lamplight at night, or the shifting light of an overcast afternoon.
It's this light-responsive quality that makes metallic Cell Activation paintings so compelling in a real space. A photograph captures the colors and forms, but it can't fully capture the way the painting shimmers and shifts as you move around the room.
The Beautiful Unpredictability

The result is always something she couldn't have planned — which is partly why she finds the technique so compelling after years of working with it.
Cell Activation in Tamara's Work

Dragonflies Golden Veil layers a delicate cherry blossom tree and a jewel-winged dragonfly over a background of shimmering gold cells — the cells read almost like sunlight filtered through water, catching and releasing the light as you move around the painting.
Chameleon's Mystic Veil sets a richly colored chameleon into a field of cherry blossoms, with Cell Activation forming the atmospheric background — every pour unique, every cell a different shape, creating a sense of depth and movement that surrounds the central subject.
Butterfly Effect is another example of how the technique pairs with representational subject matter. The cells don't compete with the painted subject — instead, they provide an alive, shimmering context that makes the focal point feel like it's genuinely suspended in a luminous world rather than painted onto a flat surface.
